A Bio-Mechanical Running Assessment
A biomechanical running assessment is a systematic evaluation of how your body moves while running. It is used to improve performance, increase efficiency, and identify factors that may lead to injury.
Key Components
1. Video Gait Analysis
High-speed cameras record you running on a treadmill from multiple angles (side and back). This allows clinicians to observe specific phases of your stride that are too fast for the naked eye.
2. Joint Kinematics
Assessment of the angles and movement patterns of the ankles, knees, hips, and pelvis. Common focus areas include overpronation, knee valgus (inward collapse), and pelvic tilt.
3. Foot Strike Pattern
Determination of whether you are a heel, midfoot, or forefoot striker, and how this affects the impact forces traveling through your legs.
4. Cadence and Step Length
Measuring how many steps you take per minute. A low cadence often leads to "overstriding," which places excessive stress on the joints.
5. Physical Screening
A "table-based" assessment of muscle strength, flexibility, and joint range of motion to see if physical limitations are causing the movement patterns seen on the treadmill.
Why Get One?
- Injury Prevention: Identifying "weak links" before they lead to conditions like runner's knee, shin splints, or plantar fasciitis.
- Performance: Optimizing your economy (using less oxygen to maintain the same speed).
- Footwear Selection: Getting data-driven recommendations for the type of running shoe that best suits your mechanics.
Who Benefits?
The Biomechanics of Running: Analysis & Re-Education assessment is designed for anyone who wants to move more efficiently and pain-free. We use The Running School Movement Repatterning Method, which has helped over 75,000 runners to correct their technique, increase speed, and reduce injury risk.
Local Athletes & Parkrunners: Whether you are navigating the flat promenade of Aberystwyth's 5k Race for Life or the steep elevations of Ceredigion’s competitive races, this analysis helps you shave seconds off your PB.
Injury-Prone Runners: If you suffer from recurring issues like runner’s knee or shin splints, we identify the muscle imbalances and postural deviations before they manifest as serious injuries.
Competitive Triathletes: For those training for the 12k Twin Peaks race or triathlons, this is the bridge between training hard and training smart.
To further support your progress, these assessments can be paired with our Personal Training and Custom Fitness Plans to build the specific strength required for your new, efficient running gait.

The Visionary Behind the Method
The techniques used at EAB Fitness and Wellness are rooted in the work of Mike Antoniades, the founder and Performance & Rehabilitation Director of The Movement & Running School. Mike is a UEFA licensed coach and an internationally recognised movement specialist who has worked with thousands of athletes across all ages and abilities over 30 years.
As the creator of Dynamic Movement Skills (DMS) and the Running School methodology, Mike is widely regarded as one of the UK's most innovative coaches and rehabilitation specialists. His philosophy centres on a vital question: "Are you moving poorly because you are in pain? Or are you in pain because you are moving poorly?". By bringing these world-class protocols to Aberystwyth, Liz Williams provides local clients with the same high-level clinical assessment used by elite professional athletes.
